What is Acupuncture?
Developed in China over 6,000 years ago.  Acupuncture is a powerful and complementary modality for health care be it for coping with stress, migraines, back and neck pain, insomnia, fertility issues, regulating menses, or dealing with menopause, pain management, sports injuries, pre and post operative care, trauma and emotional angst, or just for a 'tune-up'.  It is a tool for dealing with a full range of acute and chronic conditions as well as maintaining good health!

Acupuncture is both a scientific system of diagnosis, and a treatment for acute and chronic disorders.  The word means "needle piercing", yet there is no piercing such as that created by hypodermic needles.  The action is more a 'treading' motion.  Thin gauged, sterile, disposable needles are placed in 'empirical points' (acu) along specific meridians called 'energy channels' which correspond to organs of the body and their specific energetic and organic functions, at a very shallow depth (1/32 of an inch - just enough to stand up).  The needles are 38 gauge, have approximate thickness of two or three strands of human hair. These are placed on the body, and possibly the face, head and neck.  The standard needle length used is 1 inch for body areas, and 1/2 inch for face, ears, and thin skinned areas.  Needles are left in place for 30 to 60 minutes; usually front and back are treated in one session.
Point selections vary from treatment to treatment, and selection will depend upon protocol and diagnosis.  A variety of points may be selected for stimulation, such as the ears, face, neck, abdomen, back, feet, hands, arms, but may not all be included in one treatment session.

What to Expect in a Treatment
At your initial visit, after a review of your medical history, along with classical diagnostic protocols, points and complementary therapies are selected which best suit your condition and constitution.Traditional Acupuncture may be given with suggestion for herbs or nutritional support.  Emphasis is placed upon educating you in the variety of ways that you can assist your healing process.  Your lifestyle roots your choice for wellness.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?
No, because the needles are so thin and delicate.  The needles may 'prick' a little, but there is no major discomfort compared to hypodermic injections, body piercing and tattooing.  Most patients become so relaxed that they fall asleep!  Endorphins are released from the brain and enter into the bloodstream.  One feels calm, peaceful, a sense of well-being infuses your mind and body.
